Our Story
The Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks established the Carrie Murray Nature Center in the late 1980’s after receiving a generous donation from baseball legend Eddie Murray. The Nature Center, dedicated and named in memory of Mr. Murray’s mother, is located inside the 1216 acre historic Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park.
The park is home to hawks, owls, deer, fox, raccoons, beavers, opossums, turtles, and a great array of song birds.
The Nature Center
The Carrie Murray Nature Center is wheelchair accessible and boasts:
- a rehabilitation center to care for injured and orphaned wildlife
- our one-of-a-kind Rain Forest Room
- live reptiles and amphibians
- a large classroom and program area
- a hawk house for our permanent raptor residents
The Center hosts year-round nature programs and activities (many based on Baltimore school curriculums) on such topics as:
- watershed/stream conservation
- recycling
- plant and tree identification
- gardening
- proper pet choice and care
- birds and insects
- and MANY others!
College interns and adults (18 years and older) are invited to explore volunteer opportunities.

In addition to our Park and Center, we have mutually beneficial partnerships with the Gwynns Falls Trail Council, the Baltimore Zoo, the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Center, Outward Bound, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and Wildlife Rescue.
